Bus driver threatened with handgun and knife in Chelmsford

10:28am Wednesday 8th February 2012

A BUS driver was threatened with a handgun and knife by two masked teenagers who attempted to rob him.

The 54 First bus service was at a stop in Nickleby Road, Chelmsford, when two youths, who covered their faces with scarves, got on and brandished weapons at the driver through the safety screen.

They made threats and demanded money but the brave driver drove away with the doors open and both boys jumped off. Nothing was stolen.

The first suspect is described as a white boy, who spoke with a local accent, aged around 16 or 17-years-old, slight build, around 5ft10 tall, wearing a dark coloured anorak with a hood, a dark woolly hat, and a dark coloured striped scarf.

The second is described as a white boy, aged around 16 to 17-years-old, around 5ft6 tall, wearing a dark jacket and trousers.

Det Sgt Andrew Willmott said: “This was a very unusual incident for Chelmsford, and must have been frightening for the bus driver, who reacted with commendable composure.

“Detectives are urgently appealing for witnesses to this crime. Did you see any suspicious behaviour in the Nickleby Road area around 7pm on the night of Thursday February 2? Did you see anyone running through the streets during the time in question?"

Chris Nice, First spokesman, confirmed there were no other passengers on board the vehicle at the time.

He said: "We are carrying out our own investigation so until that's complete we don't have anything else to say."

The incident happened on Thursday February 2 at 7pm.

Anyone with information should contact Det Con Andrea Ford at Chelmsford CID on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
