Boxing treat for fans at Marconi

12:41pm Wednesday 8th February 2012

CHELMSFORD fans were treated to a feast of boxing at the Marconi club on Saturday.

First to box was Lenny Prudence against Alex Jones, from Tiverton. The experienced Jones knew he was in for a tough night and from the opening bell Prudence dominated with great skills.

The second was much closer with Jones not giving an inch. It was all on the final round, with both boys giving it their all. Prudence’s superior combinations and sleeker movement gave him a unanimous point decision.

This was a great show opener and Prudence was later awarded a trophy for best home boxer of the evening.

Second to box was new Chelmsford lad Zac Farmer, who was matched against a very strong Lee Dillon, from Waltham Forest.

Farmer started well but Dillon caught him with a great shot, causing the ref to give him a standing count.

The second round started with Dillon pushing Farmer backwards, delivering a flurry of shots that saw the ref give Farmer a second standing count then stop the contest in Dillon’s favour.

The third Chelmsford boxer was Joseph Molloy against the much-fancied Yousef Akram from County ABC. Molloy boxed perfectly in the first round, throwing great shots as his opponent came forward.

The second round saw the strong Akram push Molloy back and although he defended well, the final round was close with both boxers showing their skills.

Molloy finished the bout with some fantastic head and body counter punches which saw him a close majority point winner.

Next for Chelmsford was Joe Baison in one of the best contests of the evening against a boy who had previously beaten him, Jonny Horne, from Tilbury Dockers.

From start to finish it was evenly contested with Baison throwing good head and body shots and Horne counter punching.

Baison had to be strong and used his fitness and strength to finally win a close but skilful majority decision.

Although Horne lost he was judged the best visiting boxer.

Lewis Meason, having his first ever contest for Chelmsford, was matched with the very strong and capable Zac Killorean.

Meason jabbed and moved well in the first round with Killorean coming back strongly in the second.

The third round saw both boys box very well and evenly and with 30 seconds to go, Meason threw a great flurry of punches that must have caught the judges’ eye, as the referee raised Meason’s arm, winning by a majority decision.

The final Chelmsford lad in action was the eagerly awaited contest between David DJ Moore and the experienced Roy Barret, from Strood.

From the opening round this match was a clash of styles with the taller upright boxer Barret finding the unorthodox style of Moore very difficult to adjust.

These boys jabbed, fought and countered throughout the contest.

It was a very close match, but this was not Moore’s best performance but the decision by a majority came as no surprise.
